Whole-Body Vibration (WBV) refers to vibration transmitted into the body through the seat or feet of the operator. Drivers of mobile machines, such as tractors, forklifts, excavators and ride-on mowers, can be exposed to WBV, which are associated with back pain.
However, other factors, such as posture and manual handling, can contribute significantly to back pain for drivers and equipment operators. It is recognised by regulators that further study is needed to fully understand the impact of WBV.
Nevertheless, as vibration exposure can cause harm to workers, the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 requires employers to assess and manage the risks of WBV in the workplace.
