Planning & Permit Applications

Acoustics in the Planning / Permitting Process

Securing planning permission or obtaining an environmental permit requires evidence of noise impact. Noise is an increasingly important factor for local authorities and regulators - failing to address potential noise issues early can lead to costly project delays, community objections, permit or planning refusals, or even post-completion legal action.

Integrating specialist acoustic expertise from the outset can:

  • Provide local planning authorities and regulators (such as the EA, SEPA, or NRW) with the evidence they require to satisfy planning / permit requirements.
  • Identify potential noise risks early, preventing unexpected hurdles or costly redesigns late in the application process.
  • Tackle noise issues at the design stage rather than having to implement high cost retro-fit noise control measures after completion.
  • Clearly show adherence to national policy frameworks and demonstrate the use of Best Available Techniques (BAT) to minimise environmental impact.

Our Planning & Permitting Services

We provide comprehensive acoustic support across industrial, commercial, residential, and mixed-use developments. Backed by our extensive background in engineering and noise-control, our primary expertise lies in supporting clients with complex industrial and commercial projects where operational noise management is vital.

We don't just identify noise issues, we work with you to overcome acoustic challenges. Our services include:

Baseline Environmental Noise Surveys: We can undertake attended or unattended noise monitoring to capture accurate background noise data which can be used as the basis of the noise impact assessment.
Early-Stage Design Input: We collaborate directly with your project architects, developers, and engineers during the early design phase. Acoustic input early in the project can ensure noise risks are avoided before ground is broken.
Noise Impact Assessments (NIA): Undertaking assessments in accordance with relevant British Standards, including BS 4142 (for rating industrial and commercial sound) and BS 8233 (for guidance on acoustic design within buildings), often supported by Acoustic Modelling and Simulations. We provided comprehensive tailored reports to discharge planning conditions.
Environmental Permits & Variations: We provide comprehensive assessments to support new environmental permit applications or variations for existing installations. This includes Noise Impact Assessments and providing support in developing actionable Noise Management Plans to satisfy regulator requirements.
